A Calgary photographer’s reflection on memory, care, and family stories
I spend my working life with people at turning points. Expecting parents who are not quite sure how to stand. Newborns asleep in a wrap of light. Children who grow between one session and the next. Families who have gathered everyone in one room for the first time in years.
Every session brings something I did not plan for. Laughter, nerves, a toddler who refuses to sit, a grandmother who tears up before I have taken a single frame. Early in my career I might have seen these as interruptions. Now I know they are the photograph. They are the reason it will matter — and it’s a big part of why I love working as a family photographer in this city.
Recently I read Mark Durieux‘s article, The Lives We Preserve: Care, Memory, and Human Connection. One idea in it has stayed with me for weeks. We do not keep memories because we want to live in the past. We keep them because we cannot bear for the people we love to disappear.
I think that is the truest thing anyone has said about why my work as a portrait photographer exists.
More than an image
We photograph more now than any generation in history. Our phones hold thousands of images: meals, pets, screenshots, birthday candles, a child mid-jump. There is nothing wrong with any of it. These are real records of real life, and I am glad we have them.
But most of those photographs are buried within a week under the next hundred. We take them, share them, scroll past them, and move on.
A portrait works differently because it begins with a decision. Someone decides that this person, this family, this exact chapter of life deserves attention. Then everyone stops. For an hour, in a fast-moving world, people look at one another instead of at their screens. They stand close. They notice each other. The photograph records that noticing.
That is what I fell in love with as a photographer. The human being is what makes an image alive. A baby, a family, a milestone: these are not just beautiful subjects. They are chapters in a story a family will carry forward long after the session is over. It’s the reason so many Calgary families choose to work with a dedicated family photographer rather than rely on a quick phone snapshot.
The feelings we forget first
When families look at their photographs years later, the changes jump out first. The baby is suddenly a teenager. A child has grown taller than her father. An old hairstyle or a favourite toy brings back a whole era at once.
But appearance is the easy part. What fades faster, and what a good photograph can rescue, is the feeling of a season of life. The particular exhaustion and wonder of a first month with a newborn. The way siblings leaned on each other at eight and eleven. The joke that only made sense inside one family.
This is why I never chase perfection in a session. I want people relaxed enough to play, tease each other, and forget the camera for a moment. The frames that families treasure most, in my experience, are rarely the posed ones. They are the hand held a little too tightly, the child folding into a parent, the look that passes between a grandmother and a grandchild. Ordinary in the moment. Precious later.
A gift for people who are not here yet
We usually think of a family photograph as being for the people in it. But portraits are also made for people who do not exist yet.
A child will one day study a photograph and understand, in a way words never quite managed, how much she was loved. A grandchild will find his own face hiding in a great-uncle’s smile. A relative on the other side of the world will feel present at a moment she had to miss. This is how photographs become family treasures. They do not just document who was there. They help people carry one another forward.
Mark makes a point in his article that I found quietly devastating: a photograph with no one left to name the faces slowly becomes an image of strangers. The picture survives, but the people in it are lost anyway.
So the photograph is necessary, but it is not sufficient. It needs its story. Who is this? What was happening that day? Why did it matter? What did this person love, and what did they bring into the lives of everyone around them? A portrait cannot answer those questions on its own. What it can do is open the door to the conversation, again and again, for generations.
Photography is for humans
One of my great inspirations, the Turkish photojournalist Ara Güler, insisted that photography exists for humans, and that its most essential element is love. I have carried that idea through my whole career as a Calgary photographer.
Photography is technical. It is creative and artistic. But at its heart it is relational. It is a disciplined way of paying attention to people: to the fragility of a newborn’s first days, to the strength it takes to be a parent, to the bond in a family as it stretches and changes, to the individuality of every single person who steps in front of my camera.
Whether I am working in my Calgary home studio, in a client’s living room, in a park, or on a downtown street, the goal never changes. I want to make images filled with light, emotion, and genuine presence. And I have come to believe the session itself is part of the gift. A portrait session is one of the few occasions when a busy family pauses long enough to simply appreciate one another. In this life, that is not a small thing.
What we choose to keep
We cannot preserve everything, and no photograph can hold an entire life. But we can be intentional about what we keep.
We can print the images that matter instead of leaving them in the cloud. We can write names and dates on the back, the way our grandparents did. We can record the stories that go with them, make albums, pass photographs to children and relatives, and say the names of the people who shaped us out loud.
And every so often, we can choose to make a portrait that declares: this life, this relationship, this chapter deserves to be remembered.
That is not nostalgia. As Mark would put it, that is care.
A portrait is more than a photograph. It is a way of saying that someone was here, that they were loved, and that their story belongs in the future.
