Indian-Themed Newborn Session

Cultural Details in a Newborn Photo Session

I recently had the joy of photographing a beautiful East Indian newborn—my first little one to wear a turban. While I’ve photographed many babies from different backgrounds, this was a special first, and I was hoping to capture something truly heartwarming and meaningful.

During our pre-session phone-meeting, Mom shared her vision for the shoot. We talked about colour schemes, preferred poses, themes, what to wear, and what to bring. I always offer suggestions, but never impose my own style—I believe each session should reflect the family’s personality and culture. I’m open to bright colours, neutral palettes, or nude poses if that’s what my clients prefer. This time, one of their requests was to have their baby photographed in a turban, which I was excited to try. My only concern was tying it, but Dad assured me he’d handle it.

Styling Natural Themes for a Newborn for a Newborn Photoshoot

The parents chose a soft, earthy palette—shades of teal, sage, and beige—and wanted to include natural elements in the photos. I selected a few baskets and wooden props from my studio and styled them with cozy blankets and faux greenery like eucalyptus branches and leafy wreaths. These kinds of details always add warmth and texture to newborn setups and help create a calm, nature-inspired scene.

Before the family arrived, I prepped several setups. And when I found out that dad is a veterinarian, I couldn’t resist dressing baby Shivkaran in a tiny puppy outfit from my collection—he looked absolutely adorable nestled in his dad’s arms.

Personal Touches That Make a Newborn Session Special

Mom had planned to wear a sage green dress for the shoot, but a Canada Post strike delayed delivery. Instead, she wore a lovely floral dress with bright colours—and it turned out to be a perfect choice! In photos, a little colour contrast adds depth and interest. The floral pattern brought just the pop we needed against the soft, neutral background.

We waited until Shivkaran fell into a deep sleep before attempting the turban shots. Once he was fully relaxed, Dad carefully wrapped the bright yellow cotton turban around his tiny head. It was a bit big, but nothing a little Photoshop couldn’t fix! The final images were absolutely precious.

Capturing Meaningful Family Moments in a Newborn Photo Session

Mom asked to recreate a photo from my gallery: a silhouette of the baby held between both parents. Using my strobe light, we recreated it beautifully—the result was a glowing outline of baby Shivkaran, framed by love.

Another favorite setup was the handmade wooden hammock. Although he was awake, Shivkaran lay calmly in the tulle sling, looking like he was enjoying his first little hammock ride. The combination of wood, greenery, and his peaceful expression made for such a serene shot.

We ended the session with family portraits—baby with mom, baby with dad, and the three of them together. Watching new parents look at their baby with pure joy and wonder is always such a moving moment. It’s a privilege to document these early memories—when a new life begins and a new chapter as a family unfolds.

Welcoming Baby Mabel to the Studio

At just shy of 4 weeks old, baby Mabel arrived at the studio with her proud young parents, both glowing with love and excitement. Her mom, radiating joy, looked at her daughter and said something that truly stuck with me: “She is my biggest accomplishment.” That moment set the tone for the entire session—tender, emotional, and full of heart.

A Peaceful Baby with the Sweetest Noises

Mabel was an absolute dream to photograph. She slept peacefully through most of the session, occasionally making the cutest coos and sleepy sounds. Her calm nature made it so easy to pose her gently in the different setups I had prepared ahead of time. While I worked through the baby-alone poses with ease, mom and dad had a chance to kick back and rest a bit on the couch. Newborn life is exhausting, and I’m always happy when parents can catch their breath for a moment during these sessions.

Creative & Cozy Setups Just for Mabel

For this session, I designed four unique setups to highlight Mabel’s delicate features and sweet personality:

1. Tiny Bed + Name Banner+ Picture Frame

tiny newborn furniture

A small wooden bed placed in front of a paper wall with a picture frame and a garland that read “Mabel” for a personalized, cozy setting. I later photoshopped the family dog Rover’s picture in the frame. Rover has been treating Mabel like his very own pup ever since she came home; watching her with care and rushing to her side at the slightest cry, as if it’s his mission to keep her safe.

2. Cream-Colored Stocking

Next, I brought in a setup with a beautiful knit stocking placed on a foam newborn bed which was also covered with a soft cream fabric. Since the stocking was unlined and stretchy, Mabel fit right in with no fuss. She looked like a dreamy little gift, just waiting to be unwrapped.

3. Rustic Basket on Dark Wood

This setup featured a round basket on a dark wood floor drop, with a cotton plant nestled beside it. The natural textures gave it a classic, earthy feel. The basket was just the right size to accommodate an almost 1 month old baby. Sometimes I mix and match props and accessories between different set-ups to get different looks. The beige stocking matched the basket theme nicely, so I took some shots of Mabel in stocking and basket. 😊

4. Wooden Box with Chunky Knits & Spring Flowers

Proud Parents in Awe

Every time I posed Mabel into a new set up her mom and dad watched in awe, surprised by how she looked incredibly cute and how their baby made it possible to pose in certain ways. That moment is one of those, when parents see the most value of getting professional newborn photos beyond studio lighting and photography experience. It was clear just how smitten they were with their little girl. It was such a joy to witness their admiration for her in every moment.

Newborn shots with Grandma and Grandpa

Later in the session, Mabel’s grandparents arrived—and the energy in the room lifted even higher. This was their very first grandchild, and you could see the pride and happiness written all over their faces. Including them in the session made the experience even more meaningful for everyone.

Capturing Family Moments to Treasure Forever

We wrapped up the session with a round of family portraits. I love this part because it’s all about connection. We did a variety of combinations: mom and baby, dad and baby, grandma with baby, and a beautiful full-family group shot that captured just how loved Mabel already is.

A Session Filled with Love and Lasting Memories

By the end of the shoot, everyone was feeling that sweet mix of tired and joyful. It’s such a gift to freeze moments like these—when a family is just beginning their journey together, full of love and wonder. Baby Mabel’s newborn session was a reminder of why I love doing this so much: capturing fleeting moments that turn into cherished memories.

Baby Sofia

Newborn sessions are my favourite. I love photographing these admirable little miracles. Their tiny hands and feet, their heavenly baby scent…

A few days ago, I had a little client who was almost 2 weeks old but the size of a few days old baby 😊 Before they arrived, as I always do, I prepared a few different settings. Pink & white theme with a little wooden bed and a tulle bed canopy, blue theme with the bean bag covered with blue knit blanket, and a basket with a white/cotton theme with an alternate Christmas theme on the side.

When baby Sofia arrived, she was awake. I didn’t know that she was not going to sleep for the next 1.5 hrs. Being awake is not a problem itself, but if the baby is looking restless and unhappy, then it is a problem. There is no way, you can get those adorable shots from a discontent baby.

To find out what was wrong we went through the regular checklist:

Diaper? Checked √

Feeding? Checked √

Gas? Checked √

She must be ready to sleep. So, what can it be?

She was happy only when she was feeding. Then we came to the conclusion that she was going through a growth spurt and dad had to go to the nearby Safeway to get extra formula for the baby. She got the extra milk, and some more and some more… Finally, at the end of a 1.5 hr period she was full and content. She fell asleep with no tense muscle on her face, so I could start my session. Since the time was limited, I didn’t do any naked poses, but I managed to do all four settings for the baby as well as parent poses. Happy ending for everyone ♥♥♥
